Seeds continue to topple in Moscow

Fifth seed Nadia Petrova and fourth seed Flavia Pennetta have become the latest women to suffer shock defeats in the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.

The day started bad for the seeded ladies with Vesnina and Radwanska suffering defeats in the first round in Russia, they were soon joined by Italy's Pennetta who had to retire hurt having taken the first set 6-4 against Hungary's Agnes Szavay.

Szavay then led the second set 3-0 until Pennetta was forced to retire with a knee injury handing the Hungarian a place in the second round. The defeat for the Italian means that she is no longer in with a shot of being an alternate in next weeks tournament in Doha.

The shocks kept coming on a lively day in Moscow as fifth seed Nadia Petrova lost her second round match to Alona Bondarenko of the Ukraine 7-6 6-3, the Russian who beat Yana Buchina comfortably 6-2 6-0 in the first round couldn't handle the power of Bondarenko who won in straight sets.
